For over 25 years, Family Business Association – Atlantic has been helping multi-generational family businesses
succeed by bringing them together to share knowledge, experience, and peer support.
During our 16 years of annual awards events, we have recognized, celebrated, and promoted the achievements and considerable contributions made by Atlantic Canadian family businesses and young entrepreneurs to our regional economy.
Building a Lasting Legacy
This year’s Family Business Atlantic’s Awards of Excellence Luncheon takes place on May 8, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Brightwood Golf & Country Club in Dartmouth, NS.
Family Business Atlantic is proud to welcome Chuck and Ken Cartmill of LED Roadway Lighting and Don and Connor Sheehan of Amos Pewter to the stage at our Awards of Excellence. We look forward to an insightful fireside chat, facilitated by Leslie Bishop of Scotia Investments, where they will share their experiences on succession, the evolution of family business, and the principles behind building a lasting legacy across generations.
While each family business has a diverse and different history, all have the connection and support of family in common. We are grateful to our Family Business Association members and sponsors whose continued support enables us to hold this annual celebration that continues to profile the many contributions family enterprises deliver each day to our regional economy.
LED Roadway Lighting Ltd., based in Halifax, NS, is a 2020 Cleantech Export Star. With over 40 years in Atlantic Canada’s roadway lighting industry, Chuck Cartmill started his own lighting company after working as a technical sales rep for a global streetlight manufacturer.
A lifelong entrepreneur Chuck started his first business in 1973, C.S.A. Enterprises Ltd., a technical sales and marketing company for lighting and industrial products. In 2002, he anticipated LED technology’s potential and bought a 55,000 sq. ft. building in Amherst, NS, preparing to produce LED streetlights. He started C-Vision Ltd, an electronics manufacturing company and later founded LED Roadway Lighting Ltd, and oversaw its growth from a small start-up to a global manufacturer of LED street light products and control solutions and is the majority shareholder.
Chuck recently announced his retirement from the company, welcoming his son Ken and another long-time employee, Dave Scott to the positions of Co-CEO at Liveable Cities/LED Roadway Lighting. Ken is VP of Product Development has been with the organization for 18 years and has held various business development positions prior to his current role.
Amos Pewter, based in Mahone Bay, NS, was established in 1974 by Greg and Suzanne Amos where the couple converted an old boat-building shop into a workshop in the South Shore. In 2006, the couple decided to sell to Don and Lynn Sheehan, who took their entrepreneurial spirit and expanded Amos Pewter with five more flagship stores across the Maritimes.
Amos Pewter takes great pride in crafting hand-made pewter jewelry, home décor, tableware, and ornaments inspired by nature. Every piece is thoughtfully designed and produced in Mahone Bay, where the company operates an open studio and museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the artistry behind their work. With two skilled artisans continuously showcasing their craftsmanship and a commitment to in-house mold-making, Amos Pewter ensures that each creation reflects both quality and tradition.
Don and Lynn Sheehan are proud to see the next generation actively involved in the family business, with their three sons—Jacob, Connor, and Max—each taking on key roles over the past five years. Connor initially stepped in as a business manager and has since gained hands-on experience across various aspects of the company’s operations, reflecting a well-rounded approach to leadership succession. Jacob oversees retail store locations, wholesale operations, and strategic partnerships, while Max leads the marketing efforts, including photography, graphic design, and catalog development.
