Peer Groups

This is your unique opportunity to learn from each other, work on your family business opportunities and challenges, and have the security of confidential discussions in a trusting and inviting environment.

Groups consist of 8-10 diverse Family Business Atlantic members. No two members of the same family business are placed in the same Peer Group and attention is paid to generational demographics and competing industries.

Each group is involved in structured, three-hour regular meetings – where commitment is paramount to group success. Each group names a moderator from their membership and other tasks of the group are decided upon as needed. The members collaborate on what will work best for them in terms of meeting flow, content, presentations and group dynamics. All members have the opportunity to bring their challenges to the table; insight being gained by hearing from others who have had similar experiences.

Our annual subsidy (reimbursed at up to $1000) provides the opportunity for personal and professional development within team building. As a group, the members decide on the best ways to address their individual and mutual goals. Advisors are a valued resource for these groups and can join groups upon request – to address issues that benefit all members.

Why join a group?

The groups offer feedback, advice, and mutual support, based on their own often similar experiences. Group members help guide each other through the many aspects and issues associated with running a family-owned business, and in so doing offer each other valuable insight and access into the many perspectives of participating businesses, their industries, and generational challenges.

We encourage all family business members to join a Peer Group, and take advantage of the unique opportunity it affords each and every member to learn from other members, and to get valuable feedback and advice in a confidential, trusting, and inviting environment. Many members of family businesses feel alone and these groups help end that sense of isolation.

The experiences from those who have been there, on topics such as Working with Family, Managing the Business, and Succession are just a few of the areas discussed and explored.

"I have been part of my Family Business Atlantic Peer Group for over ten years, and it has become one of the most valuable spaces in my personal and professional life. What makes the Peer Group so unique is that it creates room for the conversations we often cannot have with colleagues at work or even with our family. It is a place where we can speak openly about the real, inner challenges of being part of a family business — the feelings, pressures, conflicts, and responsibilities that are often left unspoken. Around the table, there is a wide range of experience, wisdom, and perspective. Challenges are listened to with care and advice is thoughtful and honest, and every discussion is grounded in trust. Most importantly, it is one of the most confidential and safe platforms I have ever experienced. For me, my Peer Group has been more than a business resource. It has been a trusted circle of people who truly understand the complexities of family business."
